As the projects develop through the years the tasks are worked out to become more and more open or demanding. For example in year seven the specification may be worked out by crossing off the unlikely ones from a list. In year eight the students will answer questions on a given survey to help them find specification point. By year nine the students will have to write their own survey and produce a specification independently. The tasks in the design process are approached from a different angle each time. This is deliberate as it gives greater understanding as the years progress. It is hoped that this also helps those who learn in different ways to grasp concepts according to their learning preference.
One main purpose of
the year nine projects is to promote independent learning and help them
understand the process of putting together a project. Indeed the emphasis
is to give them skills and experience needed to deal with a GCSE. For
such reasons things like how to evaluate a product or how
to evaluate designs is explained in more detail.
